The Forêt de Saoû

A forest massifto discover
Just 30 minutes from Gervanne Camping, Forêt de Saoû is one of the most emblematic natural sites in the Drôme valley.
Classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, this remarkable forest offers a spectacular backdrop of limestone cliffs, deep beech forests, luminous clearings and grandiose panoramas.
It’s a place we particularly like to recommend: for hiking, climbing, observing nature… or simply taking your time.
The perched syncline: a landscape unique in Europe
The Forêt de Saoû is famous for its perched syncline, a rare geological formation.
In concrete terms, this is a valley entirely surrounded by cliffs, formed by the folding of rocks millions of years ago.
This spectacular relief gives rise to an enclosed, almost secretive landscape, dominated by the crests of the Trois Becs, visible from many points in the valley.
On a hike, it’s easy to see why this site has always fascinated geologists, naturalists and walkers.
Tours for all levels
The Forêt de Saoû is a hiker’s paradise.
Numerous marked trails allow you to discover the forest at your own pace:
- Easy, family-friendly walks deep in the forest, in the shade of the trees
- Intermediate hikes to belvederes and viewpoints
- Sporty itineraries leading to the crests and the Trois Becs, with spectacular panoramic views of the Vercors and the Drôme valley
The forest reveals all its richness: orchids, majestic beech trees, birds of prey, chamois…
At reception, we are happy to share our route advice, depending on the season, the weather and your level.
Climbing and outdoor activities
The cliffs surrounding the forest also make Saoû a renowned climbing site, with routes adapted to different levels.
It’s an ideal playground for vertical enthusiasts, in an exceptional natural setting.
The forest is also ideal for wildlife observation, nature photography and educational outings, always with respect for this protected site.
L’Auberge des Dauphins: culture and gourmet delights
In the heart of the forest lies Auberge des Dauphins, a place steeped in history.
Formerly a coaching inn, today it is home to :
- a restaurant appreciated for its simple, seasonal cuisine,
- an exhibition section, highlighting the site’s history, geology and biodiversity.
It’s an ideal place to stop off after a hike, for a bite to eat or to deepen your understanding of the forest and the perched syncline.

The Forêt de Saoû is a fragile natural area.
To preserve it, a few simple rules apply:
– stay on the marked trails,
– don’t pick plants,
– respect the fauna and the calm of the area,
– keep dogs on a leash according to regulations.
Discovering Saoû also means learning to walk gently, observe and listen.
Why we love the Forêt de Saoû so much
Because it perfectly sums up the spirit of the Drôme:
wild but accessible, spectacular but soothing, rich but preserved.
Whether you’re an avid hiker, climber, geologist or nature lover, the Forêt de Saoû is a must-see during your stay at Gervanne Camping.

The Forêt de Saoû can also be discovered from the sky, on a sunrise hot-air balloon flight, for a spectacular and soothing view of the landscape.
